Transition into Nursery

A successful transition into Nursery is underpinned by carefully planned communication. We have developed a transition offer which invites our families to engage in school life and interact with staff prior to children starting school. It is imperative that our new starters feel a sense of familiarity with Nursery staff so that trusting relationships are blossoming before children are left in the setting without their grown-ups. We offer a pathway of support in run up to a child’s start date and take pride in the role we play in supporting transition.

Professionals could recommend preparing for school by talking about a change in routine, introducing uniform and walking past the school building. Whilst we recognise the benefits of home discussions and preparation, children cannot be truly prepared for starting Nursery unless they have the opportunity to engage in aspects of school life before their start date.

We value the partnership between parents/carers and strive to provide families with memorable and reassuring experiences which instil a sense of excitement about joining our school family.

Please refer to our Nursery Transition Timeline for further details.

Transition into Reception

Starting school full-time can bring up a range of emotions for our children and their families. No matter children’s pre-school experience, we pride ourselves on making the transition into full-time learning as smooth as possible. Working collaboratively with a range of settings is integral to our practice. In 2022, our Reception team welcomed new starters from 14 different nurseries!

We have developed a transition offer which invites our families to engage in school life and interact with staff prior to children starting school. Please refer to our Reception Transition Timeline for further details.

Transition into Early Years at Barley Fields

We have developed a range of documents to support our transition process. Families who are joining Nursery and Reception will all receive a copy of our transition story. This is an illustrated book which outlines key information including uniform, classroom organisation and lunchtime routines.

We ask all new starters to complete an All About Me document. Prior to children’s start dates, we use the information our families have shared to prepare an inspiring and challenging learning environment which reflects children’s current interests and fascinations.

From their very first day, we endevour to ensure all children feel represented in their classroom. This is why we include a mark making template as part of the All About Me document. It is important to us that all children recognise the marks they have made, or photographs they have shared, as they enter their classroom for the first time.
